A 6kVA UPS in Kenya suits a small server room, a full network rack, a busy clinic or a school computer lab. When its output power factor is 1, it carries up to 6 kW. In practice, plan for a real load of about 4 to 4.5 kW, so the unit keeps headroom and the batteries last longer.
Power cuts are the reason people buy one. In the year to June 2026, the average Kenya Power customer had 3.91 interruptions a month, according to EPRA figures reported by The Eastleigh Voice. Each one lasted 3.23 hours on average. This guide is for IT managers, facilities teams, clinic and school administrators, and owners who have outgrown a 3 kVA unit.

Key takeaways
- The SIEL Greenpoint 6K delivers 6 kVA and 6 kW, so a real load of about 4,200 W leaves 30% headroom.
- Each Greenpoint 6K battery box holds 20 AGM blocks at 240 V, or about 2,160 Wh on paper.
- A full 6 kW load draws about 25 to 26 A, while a Kenyan wall socket handles 13 A.
- APC advises a generator of 1.5 to 2 times the total load, so about 9 to 12 kVA for a full 6 kW.
- Encom supplies the Greenpoint 6K on order and quotes per project, with prices excluding VAT.
What can a 6kVA UPS run?
A 6kVA UPS runs a real load of up to about 4,200 W with healthy headroom. In fact, that covers more than most people expect. For example, it can hold a rack with two or three servers, storage, a firewall and core switches. It can also carry a floor of office PCs fed from their own distribution board.
SIEL itself calls the Greenpoint range “ideal for IT and server loads in industrial and commercial uses” on its Green Point product page. So think servers, networks, tills, CCTV and computers. However, keep laser printers, copiers, kettles, fridges and air conditioners off it. Their start up surges eat headroom and drain the battery fast.
A worked example: a clinic in Kisumu
Take a private clinic that wants its records, tills and cameras to keep running when the lights go. These are example figures, so measure your own with a plug-in power meter.
| Equipment | Real draw |
|---|---|
| Patient records server | 350 W |
| Backup NAS | 60 W |
| Router, firewall and switches | 150 W |
| 12 PCs with monitors at 150 W | 1,800 W |
| CCTV recorder and 16 cameras | 200 W |
| Pharmacy tills and receipt printers | 100 W |
| Total | 2,660 W |
After adding 30% headroom, the clinic needs about 3,460 W. As a result, a 3 kW unit is too small. However, the 6K carries it with room for six more PCs, so the clinic can grow without buying again.
Is a 6kVA UPS really 6 kW?
Only when its output power factor is 1. The SIEL Greenpoint 6K online UPS has an output power factor of 1, so it delivers a full 6 kW. In contrast, many units carry a power factor of 0.8, so a “6kVA” label on those means only 4.8 kW.
That is why you should always compare kW, not kVA. Also check the class. The Greenpoint is a true online double conversion UPS, with a VFI-SS-111 rating under IEC EN 62040-3. In other words, your load always runs from the inverter, so sags, spikes and the switch to battery never reach it. Our guide to the SIEL UPS ranges also explains the rating.
How long will a 6kVA UPS last when stima imeenda?
Runtime depends on your load and how many battery boxes you add. The Greenpoint 6K uses 3U battery boxes, each holding 20 AGM blocks of 12 V and 9 Ah. So each box gives a 240 V string of about 2,160 Wh on paper. In addition, the UPS takes up to four boxes.
| Battery boxes | Stored energy | At 3 kW | At 4.5 kW |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2,160 Wh | 43 min | 29 min |
| 2 | 4,320 Wh | 86 min | 58 min |
| 3 | 6,480 Wh | 130 min | 86 min |
| 4 | 8,640 Wh | 173 min | 115 min |
Real runtime is shorter, because lead acid gives less at high drain and loses capacity with age. So treat these numbers as a ceiling. We then confirm the expected runtime for your load in every quote.
Is that enough for Kenyan power cuts?
Often it is not, so plan around your outages. EPRA’s 3.23 hour average is longer than four boxes can cover at 4.5 kW. Kenya Power also posts planned maintenance notices on its X account, and you should check them weekly. In short, if you need power for hours, pair the UPS with a generator. But if you only need a clean shutdown, one or two boxes is usually enough.
AGM or lithium batteries?
The 6K takes AGM batteries as standard. Also, it accepts a lithium (LiFePO4) string at 192 V as an option. Lithium costs more up front but lasts much longer. According to Schneider Electric, VRLA batteries last 3 to 6 years. Meanwhile, lithium-ion can last upwards of 10 years, based on accelerated testing. As a result, lithium often wins for sites that cycle the battery every week.
Keep the batteries cool
Heat quietly kills UPS batteries. Schneider Electric notes that every 8°C rise cuts lead acid battery life in half. The ideal range is 20 to 25°C. For example, a Mombasa store room at 33°C can halve the life of a battery set. SIEL rates the Greenpoint for 0 to 40°C, but your batteries still need air conditioning. Our 3kVA online UPS buying guide covers battery ageing too.
Does a 6kVA UPS need its own circuit in Kenya?
Yes. A full 6 kW load at 230 to 240 V draws about 25 to 26 A, even before the UPS charges its batteries. Kenya uses the Type G three pin socket, and NETIO lists it for currents up to 13 A. So a 6kVA UPS can never run safely from a wall socket at full load.
Instead, have a qualified electrician give it a dedicated circuit. The electrician then wires its terminal block output to your distribution board. In addition, the 6K has 3 IEC C13 outlets at 10 A and 2 IEC C19 outlets at 16 A. These suit servers and switches with removable IEC leads. Finally, the unit is 2U high, so it fits a standard 19 inch rack or stands as a tower.
What size generator for a 6kVA UPS?
Plan on about 9 to 12 kVA for a fully loaded 6kVA UPS, plus anything else the generator feeds. APC advises a generator of 1.5 to 2 times the total load, including loads that are not on the UPS. That margin stops the generator’s voltage and frequency from wandering when the UPS starts to recharge.
The Greenpoint also helps here. SIEL lists it as generator compatible, with an input power factor of 0.99. Besides, it accepts input from 110 to 300 V. In other words, a sagging generator or a weak rural line does not push it onto battery.
Is a 6kVA UPS the same as a 6kVA solar inverter?
No, although many Kenyans search for one and find the other. A home solar hybrid inverter mainly stores solar power and runs a house. Many of them switch to battery when the grid drops. By contrast, an online UPS feeds every watt through its inverter all the time, so there is no switchover gap.
That gap matters for servers, network gear and medical records. However, it matters far less for lights and a TV. So if you want backup for a home rather than an office, read our article on keeping your work going when stima imeenda.
How much does a 6kVA UPS cost in Kenya?
We price the Greenpoint 6K by quote, because the battery setup changes the total more than the UPS itself. Encom Digital is SIEL’s only retailer in Kenya and East Africa, and we supply each unit on order. Also, our prices always exclude VAT.
Four things move the price: battery boxes, AGM or lithium, mounting, and electrical work. So send us your load list or measured watts, the runtime you want, and whether you have a generator. Request a quote on WhatsApp on +254 714 962 072, or Email us.
Should you buy the 6K, the 3K or the 10K?
Choose by your real load, with 30% headroom on top:
- Under about 2,100 W: the SIEL Greenpoint 3K is enough, and it costs less.
- From about 2,100 to 4,200 W: the Greenpoint 6K is the right fit.
- From about 4,200 to 7,000 W: step up to the Greenpoint 10K, which is also single-phase.
Above that, read our guide to 10kVA online UPS options, where three-phase SIEL models take over. You can also browse the full critical and industrial UPS range.
