A 30kVA UPS in Kenya protects up to 30 kW of critical load, which suits a small server room, a bank branch, a clinic or a large school computer lab. At Encom, you can choose between the SIEL Safepower S 30K and the SIEL Safepower Evo HF 30K, and both need a three-phase supply. We quote each one per project, because your battery bank and backup time set most of the price.
Prices and specs checked on 28 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Both SIEL 30kVA models give the full 30 kW, because their output power factor is 1.
- At 400 V three-phase, a 30kVA UPS draws about 43 A per phase at full load.
- The Safepower S 30K is only 250 mm wide and weighs 223 kg with its internal batteries, or 71 kg without.
- EPRA puts the average Kenyan outage time at 8.39 hours a month, against a target of 1.5 hours.
- In Uptime’s 2025 survey, 57% of operators said their last major outage cost over $100,000.
How much does a 30kVA UPS cost in Kenya?
There is no fixed shelf price for a 30kVA UPS in Kenya, because the battery bank changes the total so much. For example, 15 minutes of backup needs far fewer battery blocks than three hours. So we quote each SIEL unit once we know your load and the runtime you want. Also, all our prices exclude VAT.
In particular, four things shape your quote:
- The model. Either the Safepower S 30K or the Evo HF 30K, since they differ in size, battery options and parallel limits.
- The batteries. You can use internal blocks for short runtimes, or external cabinets for longer ones. The Evo HF also offers lithium (LiFePO4).
- Installation. Cabling and breakers, as well as a maintenance bypass switch if your site wants one.
- Monitoring. SNMP or relay cards when the UPS should report to your network or building system.
Since SIEL units come on order, the quote also gives you the lead time. Encom is the only SIEL retailer in Kenya and East Africa, so your quote comes straight from us.
What can a 30kVA UPS run?
A SIEL 30kVA UPS carries up to 30 kW of running load. In practice, that covers a small server room, a bank branch with its ATMs and teller PCs, a clinic’s lab and imaging gear, or a busy call centre floor.
Air conditioners, pumps and lifts belong on the generator instead. Their start-up surges eat UPS capacity fast, and they rarely need clean power.
Is a 30kVA UPS the same as 30 kW?
Only when its output power factor is 1. As Schneider Electric explains, “Watts is the real power drawn by the equipment, while volt-amps are called the apparent power.” Many UPS units carry a 0.8 or 0.9 rating, so a 30kVA model of that kind gives only 24 or 27 kW. In contrast, SIEL rates both 30K models at 1, so 30 kVA means 30 kW.
Is 30kVA the right UPS size for your site?
A 30kVA UPS is the right size when your measured critical load sits at about 21 to 24 kW. That is because we suggest running a UPS at 70 to 80% of its rating, so you keep room to grow. For example, a 15 kW load fits a 20kVA unit better, while 28 kW points you to a 40kVA unit.
To find your real load, ask your electrician to log each phase for a week with a power meter. Nameplate ratings tend to overstate what equipment draws, so adding them up often leads to an oversized UPS. Also, list what you plan to add in the next three years, such as a new rack or more workstations.
What is the full load current of a 30kVA UPS?
At 400 V three-phase, a 30kVA UPS draws about 43 A per phase at full output. The standard formula is I = kVA x 1000 / (1.732 x V), so 30,000 / (1.732 x 400) gives 43.3 A.
- Similarly, at 380 V it rises to about 46 A per phase.
- Likewise, at 415 V it drops to about 42 A per phase.
- The input side draws a little more while the batteries recharge, so allow a margin on the input breaker.
SIEL makes single-phase versions only of its 10K and 20K models. As a result, a 30K needs a three-phase supply from KPLC, so check your meter before you order.
What cable size does a 30kVA UPS need?
Cable size depends on the run length, the way your electrician lays the cable and the breaker, so a licensed electrician should confirm it on site. Still, the 43 A per phase figure gives them the starting point. In Kenya, this work falls under EPRA’s Electrical Installation Work Rules, which also cover licensing for electricians.

When to choose the Safepower S 30K
Pick the Safepower S 30K when floor space is tight. Its cabinet is only 250 mm wide, and it is the largest Safepower S model that can hold its batteries inside. So you get a complete 30 kW system in one slim cabinet, as long as a short runtime suits you. In addition, it brings LAN, Modbus, remote emergency power off and a diesel mode input. Its charger also gives up to 20 A, which helps refill a large external bank after a long outage.
When to choose the Evo HF 30K
Pick the Safepower Evo HF 30K when you want more battery inside the cabinet, lithium, or room to grow. It holds up to three internal strings, and up to eight units can run in parallel. That means you can add a second 30K later for N+1 redundancy. Also, it carries 103% load with no time limit. However, it stands 1,320 mm tall and weighs 267 kg with batteries, so check your floor and doorways first.
How many batteries does a 30kVA UPS need?
A SIEL 30kVA UPS runs on a string of 12 V blocks split around a centre point. The Evo HF 30K takes 40 blocks per string (20 + 20), and it fits up to three strings of 9Ah blocks inside. Meanwhile, the Safepower S 30K takes an adjustable string of 16 to 20 blocks, either inside the cabinet or in external cabinets.
For longer backup, we add more strings or bigger blocks. As a result, the battery count in your quote follows the minutes you need, not just the UPS size.
How long will a 30kVA UPS last on battery in Kenya?
Backup time depends on your real load and your battery bank, so there is no single figure. For instance, a UPS at half load runs far longer than one at full load on the same batteries. Lead-acid blocks also give less capacity when you drain them fast, so we work from the battery maker’s discharge tables.
- With a generator: you only need enough time for it to start and take the load, plus a margin. We usually suggest 10 to 15 minutes.
- Without a generator: plan instead for your longest likely outage.
Kenyan outages are long enough to plan around. According to EPRA’s latest biannual statistics, customers averaged 8.39 hours of outages and 3.52 interruptions a month. Then on 29 July 2026, a widespread grid failure cut power for about three hours in Nairobi, the Coast, Mt Kenya and parts of the Central Rift.
Kenya Power also posts planned maintenance outages almost daily on its official X account. So check how long those usually last in your area before you choose a runtime.
Why heat shortens UPS battery life
Heat is the other thing that cuts runtime over the years. Fuji Electric notes that “for every 15°F (8°C) to 18°F (10°C) increase above 77°F (25°C), battery life may be reduced by approximately 50%.” So in Mombasa or Kisumu, a cooled battery room pays for itself. SIEL rates both 30K models for 0 to 40 °C and up to 95% humidity, without condensation.
Does a 30kVA UPS work with a generator?
Yes, and both SIEL 30K models suit generator sites. Their input power factor is 0.99, with current distortion (THDi) of 3% or less, so the generator sees a clean, steady load. The Safepower S also accepts 208 to 478 V and 40 to 70 Hz at its input, which lets it ride through generator swings without touching the batteries.
Still, size the generator from a proper load study rather than a rule of thumb. Give your generator supplier the UPS rating, its rectifier type and its battery recharge current, together with everything else the generator must carry.
Why do Kenyan businesses need a 30kVA online UPS?
Kenyan businesses of this size lose real money every time stima imeenda. Uptime Institute’s 2026 outage analysis found that power is still the leading cause of impactful data centre outages. In fact, failures of UPS systems, transfer switches and generators make up most of those. In Uptime’s 2025 survey, 57% of operators said their last major outage cost more than $100,000, while 1 in 5 put it above $1 million.
An online UPS removes the switchover gap, because your equipment always runs from its inverter. That is why both SIEL 30K models use online double conversion. In SIEL’s words, the Evo HF range gives “clean energy to the connected load, without interruption, regardless of the conditions of the supply network.” Even so, regular servicing matters as much as the unit itself.
