HP Laptop 14s

A light 14 inch HP with a Core i7 for students and everyday work

The HP 14s is HP’s everyday 14 inch laptop, a smaller and lighter alternative to the 15.6 inch HP 15. Ours is from the 14s-dq2 series, with an 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD. That is a quick combination for a laptop this size, and at about 1.46kg it is easy to carry to lectures, client visits and meetings. We install Windows 11 on it before delivery.

It is part of our range of student laptops.

What you get

11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7

The Core i7-1165G7 has four cores and eight threads and boosts up to 4.7GHz. It runs Office, browsers, Zoom and Teams without effort and copes with large spreadsheets, research with many tabs open, and light photo editing in Lightroom or Canva. HP pairs it with Intel Iris Xe graphics, which handle video streaming and simple editing well.

8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD

Eight gigabytes is enough for a normal day of study or office work. The 14s-dq2 has two memory slots and takes up to 32GB, so you can add memory later instead of replacing the laptop. Ask us before you buy a module so we can confirm what fits and keep the memory in dual channel, which the Iris Xe graphics need for full speed. The 512GB NVMe SSD keeps start-up and file opening fast and leaves room for years of documents.

14 inch screen

HP’s spec sheets for the 14s-dq2 units sold in this region list a 14 inch HD (1366 x 768) anti-glare screen with slim side bezels, rated at 250 nits. The anti-glare finish helps under office lights and near windows. If you want a Full HD screen, ask us to confirm the panel on this unit before you order, or look at the newer models below.

Ports

You get one USB-C 5Gbps port, two USB-A 5Gbps ports for a mouse, flash drives and printers, an HDMI 1.4b port for a monitor, TV or projector, an SD card reader and a headset jack. It charges through HP’s round barrel charger. There is no Ethernet port, so use Wi-Fi or a USB network adapter.

Wireless and webcam

Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 are built in, with an HP True Vision 720p webcam and dual microphones for online classes and video calls.

Size, weight and battery

HP quotes the 14s-dq2 at about 324 x 225mm and under 18mm thick, with a weight of about 1.46kg. The 41Wh battery charges to about 50% in 45 minutes when the laptop is switched off, according to HP, which helps on days with short breaks between classes.

Who it suits

The HP 14s suits university and college students, teachers, sales staff and anyone who carries a laptop most days but still wants a Core i7. It also works well as a home laptop for a family that shares one computer. If you need a number pad and an Ethernet port, the bigger HP 15-dw has both. If you want a sharper screen and a newer processor, look at the options below.

Operating system

We install Windows 11 on it before delivery, so it is ready to use when it arrives. If you would rather run a different operating system, tell us when you order.

How it compares

The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14ITL6 is the closest rival, another 14 inch laptop on Intel’s 11th generation. The ASUS Vivobook 14 is a lower-cost 14 inch option. For a newer processor, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14IRH10 is the step up, and if you want a business-grade 14 inch HP, the HP ProBook 440 G10 runs on 13th Gen Intel.

Looking after it

Use a surge protector or a UPS where power cuts are common, because a surge when power returns can damage the charger and the board. Keep the vents clear by working on a hard surface rather than a bed or sofa, and carry it in a padded sleeve or bag. Clean the keyboard with a soft brush and the screen with a dry microfibre cloth, and keep drinks away from the keyboard.

Works well with

The HP Wireless Mouse 200 is a small mouse that travels well. The UGREEN Metallic Foldable Laptop Stand folds flat for your bag and lifts the screen to eye level, and the Logitech C920e webcam gives you a sharper picture for calls and online teaching.
