60kVA UPS in Kenya: Price, Batteries, Generator Size and Which SIEL to Choose

A 60kVA UPS protects up to 60 kW in a server room, hospital wing or bank head office. Here is its full load current, how many batteries it needs, what size generator suits it, and how the SIEL Safepower S 60K and Evo HF 60K compare.

A 60kVA UPS in Kenya protects up to 60 kW of critical equipment. That is enough for a server room with several racks, a hospital wing, a bank head office or a factory’s control systems. At Encom, the two 60kVA choices are the SIEL Safepower S 60K and the SIEL Safepower Evo HF 60K. Both are three-phase online double conversion units, and we quote them per project because the battery bank sets most of the price.

Key takeaways

  • Both SIEL 60kVA models give a full 60 kW, since their output power factor is 1.
  • At full load, a 60kVA UPS draws about 87 A per phase on a 400 V three-phase supply.
  • The Safepower S 60K reaches up to 96.5% efficiency online, while the Evo HF 60K reaches up to 96.6%.
  • Kenyan electricity users face about 8.39 hours of blackouts a month, according to EPRA data.
  • Encom supplies SIEL on order, so every 60kVA UPS quote includes a battery bank sized for your runtime.

What is the 60kVA UPS price in Kenya?

There is no fixed shelf price for a 60kVA UPS in Kenya, because the batteries change the total so much. For example, 10 minutes of backup at 60 kW needs a far smaller battery bank than two hours. So we quote each SIEL unit once we know your load, your runtime and your site. Also, all Encom prices exclude VAT.

In particular, four things move the final figure:

  • The model. Safepower S or Safepower Evo HF, because the Evo HF scales further.
  • The battery bank. Standard VRLA blocks, or lithium (LiFePO4) when you choose the Evo HF.
  • Redundancy. One unit, or two in parallel as N+1 when downtime is not an option.
  • Installation. Cabling, breakers and a bypass switch, as well as any battery cabinets.

What can a 60kVA UPS run?

Because its power factor is 1, a SIEL 60kVA UPS can carry up to 60 kW of running load. For instance, that covers several server racks or a hospital wing. It also suits a bank head office or the controls of a production line.

For scale, average server racks still draw below 8 kW, according to the Uptime Institute’s 2024 survey. So one 60kVA unit can protect about six or seven average racks. However, we usually advise running a UPS at no more than about 80% of its rating. That means a planned load of about 48 kW. That leaves room for growth and for start-up surges.

Power problems are also the main reason sites go down. The Uptime Institute’s 2025 outage report states that “power remains the leading cause of impactful outages.”

What is the full load current of a 60kVA UPS?

At 400 V three-phase, a 60kVA UPS draws about 87 A per phase at full output. The formula is I = kVA × 1000 / (√3 × V), so 60,000 / (1.732 × 400) gives 86.6 A.

Supply voltageCurrent per phase at 60 kVA
380 VAbout 91 A
400 VAbout 87 A
415 VAbout 83 A
Calculated with the standard three-phase formula.

These figures help you plan breakers and cable sizes before installation day. Still, cable size also depends on run length and how the cable is laid, so a licensed electrician must confirm it. In Kenya, this work falls under EPRA’s Electrical Installation Work Rules, which also cover licences for electricians and contractors.

Does a 60kVA UPS need three-phase power?

Yes. Both SIEL 60kVA models take a 380, 400 or 415 V three-phase supply with neutral, and they give a three-phase output. In contrast, the single-phase versions in these ranges stop at 20 kVA. So if your building only has single-phase power, talk to Kenya Power and your electrician before you plan a 60kVA UPS in Kenya.

When to choose the Safepower S 60K

Pick the SIEL Safepower S 60K when you want a light cabinet and a separate battery room. At 83 kg, it is easy to move into place. It also has a 7 inch touchscreen, as well as LAN, Modbus, dry contacts and a diesel mode input for sites with a generator.

When to choose the Evo HF 60K

Pick the SIEL Safepower Evo HF 60K when you plan to grow or want lithium batteries. Up to eight units can run in parallel, so you can add capacity later. SIEL describes the range as “ideal for the protection of computer networks, telecommunications and critical systems in general.”

How many batteries does a 60kVA UPS need?

A SIEL 60kVA UPS uses a string of 12 V blocks split around a centre point. The Evo HF 60K takes 40 blocks per string (20 + 20), and it has room inside for up to three strings of 9Ah blocks. For longer backup, we then add external battery cabinets.

Meanwhile, the Safepower S 60K takes an adjustable string of 30 to 50 blocks. However, the count matters. According to SIEL, 36 to 50 blocks give full power. In contrast, 32 or 34 blocks cut the output power factor to 0.9, or about 54 kW. Likewise, 30 blocks cut it to 0.8, or about 48 kW. That is why we never trim blocks to save money on a 60kVA quote.

How long will a 60kVA UPS run on battery?

Runtime depends on your load and your battery bank, so there is no single answer. For example, a 60kVA UPS at half load runs much longer than one at full load on the same batteries.

Your target also depends on whether you have a generator. According to a Vertiv paper for the Battcon conference, UPS batteries have traditionally been sized for 15 minutes, since the UPS only bridges the gap until a generator takes over. As a result, we size from the maker’s discharge tables rather than simple division.

What size generator suits a 60kVA UPS?

Plan for a generator of about 75 to 120 kVA when it only feeds the UPS. UK specialist UPS Systems suggests a generator of 1.25 to 2 times the UPS output. That is because a UPS draws a distorted current that heats the alternator.

That distortion is the real issue. Consulting-Specifying Engineer warns that “harmonic distortion can cause excessive heating at the generator”, and it notes that a 6-pulse rectifier typically has about 30% THD. By comparison, both SIEL 60K models keep input distortion (THDi) at 3% or less, with an input power factor of 0.99. So they sit at the gentle end of that range, and your generator may not need the top of the ratio. In any case, your electrician should confirm the final size.

How much heat does a 60kVA UPS give off?

At full 60 kW load and 96.5% efficiency, a 60kVA UPS loses about 2.2 kW as heat. In ECO mode at 99%, that loss falls to about 0.6 kW. Over a full year at full load, the online figure adds up to roughly 19,000 kWh, so efficiency also shows on your power bill.

Because of this, plan cooling for the UPS room as well as the server room. SIEL rates both models for 0 to 40 °C and up to 95% humidity without condensation. Since the cabinets are IP20, keep them indoors and away from dust, which matters in dry parts of Nairobi and on factory floors.
