The replacement charger for 15 inch MacBook Pro models from 2012 to 2015
The Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter is the charger Apple shipped with the 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, the models sold from mid 2012 to mid 2015. Many of these MacBooks are still working hard in offices, studios and homes across Kenya, and the charger is usually the first part to wear out: the cable frays near the connector, the pins stop making contact, or the adapter simply goes missing. This is a genuine Apple replacement.
MagSafe 2 is the thinner, wider magnetic connector Apple used from 2012. This adapter is designed for:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)
Apple notes that you can safely use a higher-wattage adapter on a Mac notebook that came with a lower-wattage one, so it also charges MagSafe 2 models such as the 13 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and MacBook Air models from 2012 to 2017. The Mac only draws the power it needs.
It does not fit older MacBooks with the original, taller MagSafe connector (2006 to 2012 non-Retina models), and it does not fit MacBooks from 2016 onwards, which charge over USB-C, or the newest models with MagSafe 3. If you are not sure, check the Apple menu, About This Mac, and tell us the model and year, or send a photo of the charging port.
What you get
85 watts of power
The 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro needs the full 85W to charge quickly while you work, especially the quad-core models running heavier apps. Lower-wattage chargers will either charge very slowly or let the battery drain under load. This adapter gives the machine the power it was designed for.
The magnetic MagSafe 2 connector
The connector holds to the port with magnets rather than locking in. If someone trips over the cable, it pulls away cleanly instead of dragging the MacBook off the desk. The small light on the connector shows amber while charging and green when the battery is full.
Two ways to plug in
In the box you get the adapter, a full-length AC power cord for extra reach to a wall socket, and a compact wall plug that clips straight onto the adapter for travel. The DC cable wraps around fold-out arms on the adapter for tidy storage.
Why buy a genuine Apple charger
Cheap copies of MagSafe chargers are common in Nairobi and they are a real risk. Many lack the protection circuits Apple builds in, run hot, deliver unstable voltage and can damage the MacBook’s logic board or battery. A logic board repair on a Retina MacBook Pro costs far more than a proper charger. A genuine adapter also lasts much longer, which matters when the machine is your daily work tool.
Who it suits
This is for anyone still using a 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro from 2012 to 2015 whose charger is lost, damaged or unreliable, and for offices that keep a spare charger per machine. It is also useful as a second charger so one stays at the office and one at home.
If your MacBook is that age, it is worth knowing it no longer gets the newest macOS releases. If you are spending money keeping it alive, compare the cost with a new MacBook Air 13 inch (M5) or the more affordable MacBook Neo.
Looking after the charger
Most MagSafe chargers fail at the point where the cable meets the connector. Pull from the connector itself, not the cable, when you unplug. Do not wrap the cable tightly around the adapter; leave a loose loop near the connector. Keep the magnetic tip clean, since metal filings and dust stuck to it can stop it charging. Plug it into a surge-protected socket, as power spikes and outages in Kenya are hard on chargers and laptops alike.
Yes, if it is a 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro from 2012 to 2015 with a MagSafe 2 port. A higher-wattage Apple adapter is safe to use on it.
Will it fit my 2011 MacBook Pro?
No. Models before mid 2012 use the original MagSafe connector, which is a different shape.
Will it charge a MacBook Air?
Yes, MacBook Air models from 2012 to 2017 use MagSafe 2 and will charge with it.
Does it work with a MacBook from 2016 or later?
No. Those models charge over USB-C or MagSafe 3.
Is it genuine Apple?
Yes. We sell genuine Apple adapters only.
What plugs are in the box?
A full-length AC power cord and a compact wall plug.
Why does my old charger stop working when I move the cable?
That usually means the cable is broken near the connector. It is time to replace the charger before it damages the port.
