100kVA UPS in Kenya: Price, Full Load Current, Batteries and Generator Size

A 100kVA UPS protects up to 100 kW in a data centre, hospital, bank or factory. Here is its full load current, how its batteries and generator are sized, and how to get a SIEL Safepower Evo HF 100K quote in Kenya.

A 100kVA UPS in Kenya protects up to 100 kW of critical load, which suits a data centre hall, a hospital, a bank head office or a factory’s control systems. At Encom, the 100kVA choice is the SIEL Safepower Evo HF 100K, a three-phase online double conversion UPS that we supply on order and quote per project, because the battery bank sets most of the price.

Key takeaways

  • The SIEL Safepower Evo HF 100K gives a full 100 kW, since its output power factor is 1.
  • At full load, a 100kVA UPS draws about 144 A per phase on a 400 V three-phase supply.
  • The Evo HF 100K reaches up to 96.2% efficiency online and up to 99% in ECO mode, according to SIEL.
  • Kenyan electricity users face about 8.39 hours of blackouts a month, according to EPRA data.
  • A generator for a 100kVA UPS is usually sized at 125 to 200 kVA, that is 1.25 to 2 times the UPS rating.

What is the 100kVA UPS price in Kenya?

There is no fixed shelf price for a 100kVA UPS in Kenya, because the batteries change the total so much. For example, 10 minutes of backup at 100 kW needs a far smaller battery bank than an hour. So we quote each SIEL unit once we know your load, your runtime and your site. Also, all Encom prices exclude VAT.

In particular, four things move the final figure:

  • The battery bank. Standard VRLA blocks, or lithium (LiFePO4) as an option.
  • Battery cabinets. At this size, all batteries sit in external cabinets, so the cabinet count follows your runtime.
  • Redundancy. One unit, or two in parallel as N+1 when downtime is not an option.
  • Installation. Cabling, breakers and a bypass switch, as well as delivery to your plant room.

What can a 100kVA UPS run?

Because its power factor is 1, a SIEL 100kVA UPS can carry up to 100 kW of running load. For instance, that covers a row of server racks, the theatres and ICU of a hospital, or the core systems of a bank. It also suits the PLCs, drives and controls of a production line.

However, we usually advise running a UPS at no more than about 80% of its rating. So a 100kVA unit fits a planned load of about 80 kW. That leaves room for growth, as well as for start-up surges. For example, ten racks at 8 kW each would fill it.

Power is also the main reason sites go down. The Uptime Institute’s 2025 outage analysis states that “power remains the leading cause of impactful outages.” The same report found that nearly 40% of organisations suffered a major outage caused by human error over three years, so a clear, simple UPS setup matters too.

What is the full load current of a 100kVA UPS?

At 400 V three-phase, a 100kVA UPS draws about 144 A per phase at full output. The formula is I = kVA x 1000 / (1.732 x V), so 100,000 / (1.732 x 400) gives 144.3 A.

Supply voltageCurrent per phase at 100 kVA
380 VAbout 152 A
400 VAbout 144 A
415 VAbout 139 A
Calculated with the standard three-phase formula.

These figures help you plan breakers and cable sizes before installation day. Still, cable size also depends on run length and how the cable is laid, so a licensed electrician must confirm it. In Kenya, this work falls under EPRA’s Electrical Installation Work Rules.

Does a 100kVA UPS in Kenya need three-phase power?

Yes. The Evo HF 100K takes a 380, 400 or 415 V three-phase supply with neutral, and it gives a three-phase output. In contrast, SIEL only offers single-phase versions of this range up to 20 kVA. So if your building has a small supply, talk to Kenya Power and your electrician before you plan a 100kVA UPS in Kenya.

When the Evo HF 100K is the right 100kVA UPS

Pick the Evo HF 100K when your planned load sits between about 65 and 80 kW. It also suits sites that want lithium batteries or plan to grow, since up to eight units can run in parallel. SIEL describes the range as “ideal for the protection of computer networks, telecommunications and critical systems in general.”

When to go up or down a size

If your load is nearer 60 kW, the Evo HF 80K may be enough. On the other hand, the Safepower S 120K gives more headroom, as well as a 7 inch touchscreen and a diesel mode input for generator sites.

How many batteries does a 100kVA UPS need?

A SIEL Evo HF 100K uses strings of 40 blocks of 12 V, split 20 + 20 around a centre point. Unlike the 10 to 60 kVA models, it has no room for batteries inside. So every battery sits in external cabinets, and we add strings in parallel for longer backup.

VRLA is the standard choice, while LiFePO4 is an option. If you are weighing lithium, we can price both options in one quote. In any case, keep the battery room cool and dry, since SIEL rates the system for 0 to 40 °C.

What is the 100kVA UPS backup time?

Backup time depends on your load and your battery bank, so there is no single answer. For example, a 100kVA UPS at half load runs much longer than one at full load on the same batteries.

Your target also depends on whether you have a generator. According to a Vertiv paper for the Battcon conference, UPS batteries have traditionally been sized for 15 minutes, since the UPS only bridges the gap until a generator takes over. As a result, we size from the maker’s discharge tables rather than simple division.

What size generator suits a 100kVA UPS?

Plan for a generator of about 125 to 200 kVA when it only feeds the UPS. UK specialist UPS Systems suggests a generator of 1.25 to 2 times the UPS output, because a UPS draws a distorted current that heats the alternator.

That distortion is the real issue. Consulting-Specifying Engineer warns that “harmonic distortion can cause excessive heating at the generator”, and it notes that a 6-pulse rectifier typically has about 30% THD. By comparison, the Evo HF 100K keeps input distortion (THDi) at 3% or less, with an input power factor of 0.99. So it sits at the gentle end, and your generator may not need the top of the ratio. Still, your electrician should confirm the final size.

How much space and cooling does a 100kVA UPS need?

The Evo HF 100K cabinet measures 500 x 830 x 1600 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 180 kg, before battery cabinets. So check floor loading and door widths before delivery day.

At full 100 kW and 96.2% efficiency, the UPS loses about 4 kW as heat. In ECO mode at 99%, that falls to about 1 kW. Over a year at full load, the online loss adds up to roughly 34,600 kWh, so efficiency also shows on your power bill. Because of this, plan cooling for the UPS room as well as the server room. SIEL rates the unit for 0 to 40 °C and up to 95% humidity without condensation. Since the cabinet is IP20, keep it indoors and away from dust.
