Ask an IT officer at a Nairobi SACCO, bank branch or NGO what laptops they hand out to staff, and Dell Latitude comes up again and again. It is Dell’s business line: plain to look at, built for a full working day, and fitted with the ports offices in Kenya still use, like Ethernet and HDMI.
The tricky part is the model numbers. A Latitude 3520, 5530 and 7440 can look alike on a listing and still be very different machines. This guide explains how Dell names its Latitudes, compares the 14 models on Encom Shop with their current prices, and helps you choose the right one for your team or for yourself.
How to read a Dell Latitude model number
Every Latitude has a four digit number, and each digit tells you something.
- The first digit is the series. The 3000 series is the budget line for education and small businesses, the 5000 series is the mainstream mid-range line, and the 7000 series is the high-end, thinner and lighter line.
- The second digit is the screen size. A 4 means a 14 inch screen and a 5 means 15.6 inches. So a 5430 is a 14 inch laptop and a 5530 is its 15.6 inch sibling.
- The last two digits show the year. Dell announced the xx40 models in March 2023 and the xx50 models in February 2024. In the models we stock, xx20 means an 11th Gen Intel chip, xx30 a 12th Gen, xx40 a 13th Gen and xx50 an Intel Core Ultra.
One more thing worth knowing: in January 2025 Dell dropped the Latitude name for new laptops and moved its business range to the Dell Pro brand. The xx50 models are the last Latitude generation, which is why you will keep seeing them sold in Kenya for some time.

Which Dell Latitude should you buy?
For front desks, field staff and first jobs: Latitude 3420
At KES 63,800, the Latitude 3420 is the cheapest way into a business Dell. Its Core i3 is a dual-core chip meant for email, Word and Excel, browser systems and Zoom or Teams calls, not for video editing or design work. What it does very well is ports: USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, a microSD reader and a wired Ethernet port, so a receptionist, a loans officer or a graduate on their first job can plug into anything in the office without buying adapters.
For accounts and finance teams: Latitude 3520, 3540, 5530, 5540 or 5550
Every 15.6 inch Latitude on our list has a full number pad, and for anyone posting entries or reconciling statements all day, that alone is worth the bigger body. Which one to pick comes down to budget and how heavy the work is.
- Latitude 3520, from KES 107,800. Comes with Windows 11 installed by Encom. 8GB of RAM is fine for a normal office day, and there is room to add more later.
- Latitude 3540, KES 130,400. A 13th Gen Core i7 with 16GB. It ships with Ubuntu Linux, and we can supply a genuine Windows licence on request.
- Latitude 5530, KES 128,200. The value pick in the 5000 series: 16GB, a 12th Gen Core i5 and Thunderbolt 4 for one-cable docking at the desk.
- Latitude 5540, from KES 135,900. A newer 13th Gen chip in the same 5000 series body, with a Core i7 option at KES 162,800 for heavy reporting work.
- Latitude 5550, from KES 139,700. The newest 15.6 inch Latitude, with Intel Core Ultra processors.
A tip from the price list: the Core i7 version of the 3520 costs KES 121,000 with an 11th Gen chip and 8GB, while the 3540 gives you a 13th Gen Core i7 and double the memory for KES 9,400 more. If you are paying for a Core i7 anyway, the 3540 is the better buy.
For managers and office staff who move around: Latitude 5430, 5440 or 5450
The 14 inch 5000 series models are the sweet spot for most companies. They are smaller and easier to carry from Upper Hill to a client in Westlands than the 15.6 inch models, and they still keep Thunderbolt 4, USB-A, HDMI and a full Ethernet port. Dell’s spec sheet for the Latitude 5450 lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports and an RJ45 Ethernet port.
- Latitude 5430, KES 135,300. 16GB as standard, which keeps Excel, Outlook, Teams and a browser running together without slowing down.
- Latitude 5440, from KES 137,500. Available with 8GB or 16GB, and with Ubuntu or with no operating system, which suits companies whose IT team loads its own Windows image.
- Latitude 5450, from KES 137,500. Three versions, from a Core Ultra 5 125U with 8GB at KES 137,500 to a Core Ultra 7 155U with 16GB at KES 172,700.
For executives and people who travel every week: Latitude 7420, 7440 or 7450
The 7000 series is thinner, lighter and better finished. PCWorld called the Latitude 7450 “ideal for mobile professionals”, with price as its main drawback. That matches what we see: the 7440 and 7450 cost about KES 55,000 to 58,000 more than a 5000 series model with the same processor and memory, so buy them for the build and the weight, not for speed.
The Latitude 7420 at KES 116,400 is the way to get a 7000 series build for less. Two things to know before you buy. First, its memory is soldered to the motherboard, so the 8GB it comes with is what it will always have. Second, it has no Ethernet port, so add a USB-C adapter if your office network is cabled.
For forms, signatures and site visits: Latitude 7200 2-in-1
The Latitude 7200 2-in-1 is a 12.3 inch Windows tablet with a kickstand and a keyboard that clips on. It runs full desktop software, which suits insurance assessors, inspectors and sales teams who fill in forms or collect signatures in the field. Ask us what comes in the box with current stock before you order.
Core Ultra and AI features: what you actually get
The 5450, 5550 and 7450 use Intel Core Ultra processors with a built-in NPU, a small chip that runs AI tasks like background blur and noise removal on calls without loading the main processor. Be realistic about it, though. The Core Ultra 7 155U’s NPU is rated at 11 TOPS, and Microsoft only calls a laptop a Copilot+ PC when its NPU can do more than 40 trillion operations per second. So none of these Latitudes are Copilot+ PCs. Buy them because they are the newest, most efficient Latitudes, not for the AI label.
Windows, Ubuntu or no operating system?
This catches many buyers out, so check before you pay. On our current stock:
- The 3520 and 5520 come with Windows 11 installed by Encom.
- The 3540, 5450, 5540 and 5550 ship with Ubuntu Linux, and the 5440 comes with Ubuntu or with no operating system.
- For the rest, and for any model above, we can supply a genuine Windows licence. Tell us when you order.
Whatever you choose, run Windows 11, not Windows 10. Microsoft stopped security updates for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Every Latitude we stock uses a processor from a generation on Microsoft’s Windows 11 supported Intel list, the oldest being the 8th Gen chip in the 7200 2-in-1.
Four checks before you pay
- Does your IT team manage laptops remotely? The Core i5-1145G7 in the 5520, 7420 and the i5 version of the 3520, and the Core i7-8665U in the 7200 2-in-1, support Intel vPro. Intel describes its Active Management Technology as giving IT teams the remote management tools needed to manage a distributed fleet, which helps companies with staff across several branches.
- Do you need Ethernet? All the 3000 and 5000 series models on our list have it. The 7420, 7440 and 7450 do not list an Ethernet port, so plan on a dock or adapter.
- Will you need more RAM later? Buy 16GB on day one if the laptop will run large spreadsheets, an ERP client and video calls together. On the 7420 you cannot add memory later.
- Are you protected from power problems? A laptop battery rides through a blackout, but voltage spikes when power comes back can still damage the charger. Use a surge protector or a UPS at the desk. Our earlier piece on what to do when stima imeenda covers backup for home and small office setups.
