HP EliteBook 830 G9

A small, light HP EliteBook with a Core i7 and 1TB of storage

The HP EliteBook 830 G9 is the 13.3 inch clamshell in HP’s premium EliteBook 800 series. Compared with the G8 before it, it moves to a taller 16:10 screen, a 12th Gen processor and faster DDR5 memory, all in an aluminium body that weighs about 1.27kg. The unit we stock has a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1255U, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD and a WUXGA screen.

It is part of our range of business laptops.

What you get

12th Gen Intel Core i7-1255U

The i7-1255U has 10 cores and 12 threads: two performance cores for demanding tasks and eight efficient cores for background work. It boosts up to 4.7GHz. That is plenty for large spreadsheets, finance and ERP systems, heavy browser use, Teams calls with screen sharing and light photo editing.

16GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB SSD

Sixteen gigabytes of DDR5 memory runs in dual channel, so the Intel Iris Xe graphics work at full speed. On this model the memory is soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded, so 16GB is what it will always have. For most office and management work that is a comfortable amount. The 1TB SSD is double the usual storage for a laptop this size, with room for years of documents, email archives and media. The SSD sits in a standard M.2 slot.

13.3 inch WUXGA screen

The 1920 x 1200 IPS panel uses a 16:10 shape, which shows more of a document or web page than a standard 13.3 inch Full HD screen. The matte finish keeps reflections down under office lights, and the 400-nit brightness helps near windows.

Thunderbolt 4 and the ports you need

You get two fast 40Gbps USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support for charging, docks and external monitors, two USB-A ports for older accessories, a full HDMI port and a headset jack. There is no Ethernet port and no card reader, so use a USB adapter or a dock where you need them.

Wireless, webcam and security

Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are built in. HP offered a 5MP webcam on this generation, which gives a clearer picture than the usual 720p camera. Ask us to confirm the camera on this unit. A fingerprint reader and an IR camera for Windows Hello face sign-in are fitted on many units, and EliteBooks include a TPM 2.0 chip for BitLocker encryption along with HP’s business security tools.

Size and weight

About 1.27kg and around 19mm thick. It is light enough to carry all day and small enough for an aeroplane tray or a coffee shop table.

Who it suits

The EliteBook 830 G9 suits executives, consultants, auditors and field managers who travel and keep a lot of files on their laptop. The 1TB SSD is useful if you work offline or with large archives. If you expect to need more than 16GB of memory in future, choose a model with memory slots, such as the HP EliteBook 840 G10. If you want a bigger screen, a 14 inch laptop will be easier on the eyes.

Operating system

We install Windows 11 on it before delivery, so it is ready to use when it arrives. If you would rather run a different operating system, tell us when you order.

How it compares

The HP EliteBook 830 G8 is the previous generation, with memory slots but a 16:9 screen and an 11th Gen processor. The HP EliteBook 830 G10 x360 adds a touchscreen and a 360 degree hinge. From Dell, the Dell Latitude 5340 is the closest small premium alternative.

Looking after it

Use a surge protector or a UPS at your desk, especially where power cuts come back with a spike. Keep the vents clear and avoid soft surfaces like beds and sofas. If it stays plugged in or docked most of the day, turn on the battery care option in the BIOS or HP’s software so the battery is not held at full charge. Clean the screen and aluminium body with a dry microfibre cloth, and use a padded sleeve in your bag.

Works well with

The Logitech MX Anywhere 3S and the Logitech MX Keys Mini are compact enough to travel with it. The UGREEN Metallic Foldable Laptop Stand folds flat and raises the screen at a desk.
