Dell Inspiron 14 5482 2-in-1

A 14 inch Dell that folds into a tablet, for students and home users

The Dell Inspiron 14 5482 2-in-1 is a 14 inch convertible with a touchscreen and a hinge that folds the screen all the way back. Use it as a normal laptop for typing, stand it up in tent mode for videos, or fold it flat as a tablet for reading and notes. We have it in one configuration: an 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U with 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 14 inch Full HD touchscreen.

It is part of our range of home laptops.

What you get

8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U

The i5-8265U has four cores and eight threads and boosts up to 3.9GHz. It handles schoolwork, Office, browsing, streaming and video calls without trouble. It is an older chip than the 12th and 13th Gen processors in our newer laptops, so it is not the one to choose for heavy photo editing, video work or gaming.

8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD

Eight gigabytes is enough for everyday use. The 5482 has two memory slots and supports up to 16GB, so you can add a second stick later if you start keeping many apps open. The 512GB NVMe SSD in an M.2 slot gives fast start-up and room for documents, photos and course material.

14 inch Full HD touchscreen

The 1920 x 1080 IPS screen is sharp and responds well to touch, which makes scrolling, zooming and tapping through slides feel natural. Reviews found it on the dim side, so it works best indoors. It is fine for study and streaming, but it is not a colour-accurate screen for design work. The touchscreen also works with an active pen for handwritten notes and sketches. A pen is not included.

360 degree hinge

The hinge lets you use it in four ways: laptop, tablet, tent and stand. Stand mode is handy on a crowded desk or for watching lectures. In tablet mode the keyboard faces down and is switched off, so stray presses do nothing. At this weight it is more comfortable to use as a tablet on a desk or your lap than held in one hand.

Ports

Spec listings show a USB-C port, HDMI for a monitor or projector, two USB-A 3.x ports, a USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader and a headset jack. There is no Ethernet port, so you will connect over Wi-Fi.

Wireless and webcam

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in, and there is a webcam with a microphone for online classes and video calls.

Size and weight

It measures about 328mm by 233mm and about 20mm thick. Published weights range from about 1.75kg to 1.86kg depending on the build, which is on the heavy side for a 14 inch convertible. The upside is a solid body and a sturdy hinge.

Who it suits

The Inspiron 5482 2-in-1 suits university and college students, home users and anyone who likes a touchscreen for reading, notes and media. The tablet mode is useful for reading PDFs and e-books in bed or on the couch. If you need the newest processor, a lighter tablet for one-handed use, or a business laptop with an Ethernet port and management features, look at the options below.

Operating system

We install Windows 11 on it before delivery, so it is ready to use when it arrives, including touch and pen support. If you would rather run a different operating system, tell us when you order.

How it compares

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 2-in-1 14IAL10 is a much newer 14 inch convertible with a faster processor. The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IAU7 gives you a 12th Gen Core i5 in the same form. For a lighter 2-in-1, the HP OmniBook 5 Flip 14 is worth a look. If you want a Dell 2-in-1 built for business, see the Dell Latitude 7200 2-in-1.

Looking after it

Use a surge protector or a UPS where power cuts are common, because a surge when power returns can damage the charger and the board. Keep the vents clear by working on a hard surface rather than a bed or blanket. Fold and unfold the screen by holding it at the sides, not by one corner, to keep the hinge firm. Clean the touchscreen with a dry microfibre cloth, and the keyboard with a soft brush.

Works well with

The Dell WM126 wireless mouse is a simple add for long typing sessions. The Logitech MX Anywhere 3S is a compact mouse that works on most surfaces. The UGREEN Swivel Laptop Stand raises the screen for study at a desk.
