What can a 1kVA UPS run?
A 1kVA UPS runs a real load of up to about 700 W with healthy headroom. For example, that covers one or two office desktops with monitors, a router, a network switch and a small NAS. It can also hold a till, a receipt printer and the card machine at a shop counter.
SIEL describes the Greenpoint range as “ideal for IT and server loads in industrial and commercial uses” on its Green Point page. So think computers, networks, tills and cameras. However, keep laser printers, kettles, fridges and heaters off it. Their surges eat headroom, so they drain a small battery in minutes.

Take a three person accounts office that wants its files, internet and one workstation to stay up when the lights go. These are example figures, so measure your own with a plug-in power meter.

How many watts is a 1kVA UPS?
It depends on the power factor, so always check the watts on the label. The SIEL Greenpoint 1K online UPS has an output power factor of 1, so it gives a full 1,000 W. In contrast, Schneider Electric lists its APC Back-UPS 1000VA with a rated power of 600 W.
In other words, two boxes that both say “1kVA” can differ by 400 W. That is why you should compare kW, not kVA. Also, never load any UPS to 100% for long, because the battery time drops sharply near full load.
Online or line-interactive: which 1kVA UPS do you need?
Choose online if the equipment holds data or money, and line-interactive if it is one home PC. A line-interactive UPS passes mains power through and only switches to battery when the supply fails. By contrast, an online double conversion UPS rebuilds every watt through its inverter all the time.

Real runtime is shorter, because lead acid gives less at high drain and loses capacity with age. So treat these numbers as a ceiling. We then confirm the expected runtime for your load in every quote.
How long does it take to recharge?
Longer than most people think, especially with several boxes. SIEL lists a maximum charge current of 2 A for the 1K. Since each box at 24 V works out to about 18 Ah, one box needs roughly 9 hours to refill, and four boxes need well over a day.
That matters when outages come close together. Kenya Power posts planned maintenance notices on its X account, so check them each week. In short, if you need power for hours, pair the UPS with a generator or a power station. But if you only need a clean shutdown, one box is usually enough.
Keep the batteries cool
Heat quietly kills UPS batteries. Schneider Electric notes that every 8°C rise cuts lead acid battery life in half, with 20 to 25°C as the ideal range. Schneider also says VRLA batteries last 3 to 6 years. For example, a tin roof office in Mombasa can shorten that a lot. Because the Greenpoint batteries are hot-swappable, you can replace them without switching your equipment off.
Can a 1kVA UPS plug into a normal socket in Kenya?
Yes. A full 1 kW load at 230 V draws about 4.3 A, well inside the 13 A that a Kenyan Type G wall socket handles. As a result, you need no electrician for a 1kVA UPS, unlike the 6 kVA and larger units.
On the output side, the 1K has 8 IEC C13 outlets at 10 A. Kenyan three pin plugs do not fit those, so use IEC power leads, like the ones that come with most PCs, monitors and servers. APC advises a generator of 1.5 to 2 times the total load, so plan on at least 1.5 to 2 kVA for a full 1K, plus whatever else the generator feeds.
