A comfortable, quiet everyday mouse for small to medium hands

The Logitech Signature M650 makes sense when you have outgrown a basic office mouse but do not need a premium one. It has a contoured shape for the right hand, quiet clicks, two side buttons for back and forward, and a scroll wheel that can spin freely through long pages. It connects either through the included Logi Bolt USB receiver or over Bluetooth, and Logitech rates it at up to two years on one AA battery.

What makes the M650 worth the step up

SmartWheel scrolling

The SmartWheel scrolls line by line when you move it slowly, which gives you precision in a spreadsheet or a contract. Flick it harder and it switches to fast, free scrolling, so you can get from the top of a long web page or a 60-page report to the bottom in a second. It changes mode by itself based on how you move it.

SilentTouch clicks

Logitech says its SilentTouch technology removes about 90 percent of the click sound. You still feel each click, but colleagues, family and the microphone on your video call barely hear it. It is a good choice for open-plan offices and late-night work at home.

Side buttons for back and forward

Two thumb buttons go back and forward in your browser and in file windows. With the free Logi Options+ app on Windows or macOS, you can reassign them to other actions, such as copy and paste or switching between apps.

A shape that supports the hand

The body is curved to fit the right hand. It measures about 107 mm long, 62 mm wide and 38 mm high, and weighs around 101 g with its battery, according to Logitech. That extra contour, compared with a flat symmetrical mouse, is what makes it comfortable through a full working day.

Two ways to connect

The Logi Bolt USB receiver comes in the box for computers without Bluetooth, such as many office desktops. Laptops and tablets can use Bluetooth Low Energy instead, keeping the USB port free. Range is up to 10 metres either way.

Up to 24 months on one AA battery

Logitech rates the battery life at up to 24 months when connected through the Logi Bolt receiver, and up to 20 months over Bluetooth. The AA battery is included and is easy to replace.

Sensor

The optical sensor runs at 400 DPI by default and can be set up to 4,000 DPI in Logi Options+, which helps on large or high-resolution monitors.

Compatibility

With the Logi Bolt receiver, the M650 works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Over Bluetooth it also works with iPadOS and Android. It is certified under Google’s Works With Chromebook programme. On a business laptop like the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 6, you can use either connection. Logi Options+ customisation runs on Windows and macOS.

Setting it up

For the receiver, plug the Logi Bolt receiver into a USB-A port and switch the mouse on. For Bluetooth, switch the mouse on, hold the connect button until the light blinks quickly, and choose the mouse in your device’s Bluetooth settings. Install Logi Options+ if you want to change the side buttons or the pointer speed.

Who it suits

The M650 suits office workers, managers, accountants and students who spend hours a day on a mouse and want more comfort and less noise than a basic model gives. It is not right for left-handed users, because the shape is for the right hand only. People with large hands should look at a larger mouse. And it pairs with one Bluetooth device at a time, so if you switch between several computers often, look at a multi-device mouse.

How it compares

If you want quiet clicks on a budget, the Logitech M221 Silent costs much less but has no side buttons or SmartWheel. Looking after it

The Off White finish shows marks over time, so wipe it now and then with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Keep the sensor window clean. Switch the mouse off when you travel. When the pointer lags, put in a fresh AA. Keep the Bolt receiver safe if you unplug it.
