HP ProBook 450 G9

A 15.6 inch HP business laptop for desk-heavy office work

The HP ProBook 450 G9 is the 15.6 inch model in HP’s mainstream business range. It has a big Full HD screen, a full keyboard with a number pad and a wired Ethernet port, which is why it does well in accounts departments, banks, SACCOs, schools and busy front offices. The unit we stock runs a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, in silver.

It is part of our range of business laptops.

What you get

12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U

The i5-1235U has 10 cores and 12 threads: two performance cores for the task in front of you and eight efficient cores for everything running in the background. It boosts up to 4.4GHz. For Office, ERP and accounting systems, browser apps, email and Teams calls, it has plenty in hand, and it stays responsive when you keep several programs open through the day.

8GB RAM, 512GB SSD and room to grow

Eight gigabytes covers a normal office day. The 450 G9 has two memory slots, so you can add a second stick later rather than replace the laptop. That also matters for graphics: Intel’s Iris Xe graphics only run at full speed with memory in both slots, so a second matching stick gives a real lift for video calls on a big monitor and light photo work. Ask us before you buy memory so we can confirm what fits. The 512GB SSD keeps start-up quick and gives you room for years of documents.

15.6 inch Full HD screen and number pad

The 1920 x 1080 IPS panel has a matte finish that copes better with office lighting and windows than a glossy screen. You see more rows and columns than on a 14 inch laptop, and the spill-resistant keyboard has a dedicated number pad for fast data entry.

Ports for a normal office

You get a USB-C port that charges the laptop and drives an external display, USB-A ports for a mouse, flash drives and a printer, a full HDMI port for a monitor or projector, an RJ45 Ethernet port and a headset jack. Ethernet is a real advantage in offices with cabled networks or patchy Wi-Fi.

Wireless, webcam and security

Wi-Fi 6 class wireless and Bluetooth are built in. The 720p webcam has a privacy cover you slide shut when you are not on a call. HP fits a TPM 2.0 security chip on its ProBooks for BitLocker drive encryption, and fingerprint readers are fitted on many units. Ask us to confirm the fingerprint reader on yours.

Size and weight

It weighs about 1.74kg and is just under 20mm thick. It is a desk-first laptop that is still easy to take to meetings or between branches.

Who it suits

The ProBook 450 G9 suits finance and admin staff, schools and colleges, NGOs and small businesses that want a well-built HP with a large screen and a number pad at a sensible price. If you travel every day and want something lighter, a 14 inch model such as the HP ProBook 440 G10 is easier to carry. If you edit video or run heavy design software, look at a machine with more memory as standard.

Operating system

We install Windows 11 on it before delivery, so it is ready to use when it arrives. If you would rather run a different operating system, tell us when you order.

How it compares

The HP ProBook 450 G10 is the next generation in the same size, with a 13th Gen processor. If you prefer Dell, the Dell Latitude 3520 is the closest 15.6 inch match with a number pad and Ethernet. The Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 is worth a look if your team already uses ThinkPads.

Looking after it

Use a surge protector or a UPS where power cuts and voltage swings are common, as they are in many parts of Kenya. Keep the vents clear by working on a hard surface rather than a bed or sofa. If the laptop sits plugged in at a desk most of the day, check the battery care setting in the BIOS or HP’s own software, which holds the charge lower to slow battery wear. Clean the keyboard with a soft brush and the screen with a dry microfibre cloth.

Works well with

Add the HP 330 wireless keyboard and the HP Wireless Mouse 200 for a full desk setup. The UGREEN Metallic Foldable Laptop Stand lifts the screen to eye level for long days at a desk.
