A 2kVA UPS in Kenya is the right size for a small office of four to eight desktops, a server cabinet with a router and NAS, or a clinic reception. When its output power factor is 1, it gives a full 2,000 W. Still, keep your real load under about 1,400 W, so the unit has headroom and the batteries last longer.
After all, power cuts are why most people buy one. In the year to June 2026, Kenya Power customers had 3.91 interruptions a month on average, and each lasted 3.23 hours, according to EPRA figures reported by The Eastleigh Voice. The regulator’s report put it plainly: “This upward trajectory conflicts with regulatory goals.” This guide is for office managers, IT staff, clinic and shop owners who need their systems to stay up.

Key takeaways
- The SIEL Greenpoint 2K gives 2 kVA and 2 kW, while Schneider lists its APC Back-UPS 2200VA at 1.2 kW.
- Each optional Greenpoint 2K battery box holds 8 AGM blocks of 12 V and 9 Ah, so about 864 Wh on paper.
- For one hour at 1,000 W, plan on two battery boxes, because one box gives only about 52 minutes on paper.
- A full 2 kW load draws about 8.7 A at 230 V, so a 13 A wall socket can feed it.
- Encom supplies the Greenpoint 2K on order and quotes per setup, with prices excluding VAT.
What can a 2kVA UPS run?
A 2kVA UPS runs a real load of up to about 1,400 W with safe headroom. For example, that covers six to eight office desktops with LED monitors, as well as the router and switch. It can also carry a small server, a NAS and a CCTV recorder in one cabinet.
SIEL calls the Greenpoint range “ideal for IT and server loads in industrial and commercial uses” on its Green Point page. So think computers, networks, tills and cameras. However, keep kettles, fridges, heaters and laser printers off it. Their surges eat headroom, and they drain the battery fast.
A worked example: a small clinic in Kisumu
For instance, take a clinic that wants its records, reception and pharmacy till to keep working during an outage. These are example figures, so measure your own with a plug-in power meter.
| Equipment | Real draw |
|---|---|
| Four desktops with monitors | 600 W |
| Small server or NAS | 120 W |
| Router, switch and Wi-Fi | 40 W |
| Till and receipt printer | 60 W |
| CCTV recorder and cameras | 60 W |
| Total | 880 W |
So after adding 30% headroom, the clinic needs about 1,150 W. As a result, the 2K is the right fit, while a 1kVA unit would be overloaded.
How many watts is a 2kVA UPS?
It depends on the output power factor, so always read the watts on the label. The SIEL Greenpoint 2K online UPS has a power factor of 1, so it gives 2,000 W. In contrast, Schneider Electric lists the APC Back-UPS 2200VA at 1.2 kW.
| Model | VA | Watts | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIEL Greenpoint 2K | 2,000 | 2,000 | Online |
| APC Back-UPS BX2200MI | 2,200 | 1,200 | Line interactive |
In other words, a “2kVA” label can hide an 800 W gap. Many 2000VA line interactive units sold in Kenya, such as common Mecer models, list about 1,200 W too. That is why you should compare kW, not kVA.
Why online matters for Kenyan power
An online UPS rebuilds every watt through its inverter, so brownouts and surges never reach your load. A line interactive unit, on the other hand, passes mains through and only switches to battery when the supply fails. The Greenpoint meets VFI-SS-111, the top output class under IEC EN 62040-3. It also accepts input from 110 to 300 V, so a weak line does not push it onto battery. Our guide to how online double conversion works explains the classes.
How long will a 2kVA UPS last when stima imeenda?
That depends on your load and on how many battery boxes you add. According to SIEL, the 2K runs on a 48 V battery bank, and each optional box holds 8 AGM blocks of 12 V and 9 Ah. So one box stores about 864 Wh on paper. In addition, the UPS takes up to four boxes, each 2U high.
| Boxes | Energy | At 500 W | At 1,000 W | At 1,400 W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 864 Wh | 104 min | 52 min | 37 min |
| 2 | 1,728 Wh | 207 min | 104 min | 74 min |
| 3 | 2,592 Wh | 311 min | 156 min | 111 min |
| 4 | 3,456 Wh | 415 min | 207 min | 148 min |
Real runtime is shorter, because lead acid gives less at high drain and loses capacity with age. So treat the table as a ceiling. We then confirm the expected runtime for your load in every quote.
How do you get a 2kVA UPS with 1 hour backup?
Add two battery boxes if your load is around 1,000 W. One box gives about 52 minutes on paper, so it falls short once losses kick in. With two boxes, however, the ceiling is about 104 minutes, which leaves room for ageing batteries.
For a full 3.23 hour outage, the average EPRA reported, you need a lighter load as well as more boxes. For instance, four boxes at 500 W give a ceiling near 7 hours. Above that, pair the UPS with a generator.
How long does the battery take to recharge?
Longer than most buyers expect. SIEL lists a maximum charge current of 2 A for the 1K to 3K models. Since each 2K box works out to about 18 Ah at 48 V, one empty box needs roughly 9 hours to refill. Four boxes, then, need well over a day.
That matters when outages come close together, so check the planned maintenance notices Kenya Power posts on its X account. Heat also matters. Schneider Electric notes that every 8°C rise in temperature cuts battery life in half. Because the Greenpoint batteries are hot-swappable, you can replace them later without switching your equipment off.
Can a 2kVA UPS plug into a normal socket in Kenya?
Yes, in most offices. A full 2 kW load at 230 V draws about 8.7 A, which sits inside the 13 A that a Kenyan wall socket handles. Even so, give the UPS its own socket, rather than sharing an extension with a kettle or a printer.
On the output side, the 2K has 8 IEC C13 outlets at 10 A. Kenyan three pin plugs do not fit those, so use IEC power leads, like the ones that come with most PCs and servers. Besides, the unit is 2U high, weighs up to 21 kg and converts between rack and tower. Our guide to sizing a rack mount UPS covers rack depth and weight.
Will it work with a generator?
Yes, since SIEL lists the Greenpoint as generator compatible, with an input power factor of 0.99. Still, size the generator with a margin. APC advises a generator of 1.5 to 2 times the total load. So plan on at least 3 to 4 kVA for a fully loaded 2K, plus anything else the generator feeds.
For a home office without a generator, however, a portable power station is often the better partner. Our guide to choosing an EcoFlow power station compares the units we stock.
What is the 2kVA UPS price in Kenya?
We price the Greenpoint 2K by quote, because the number of battery boxes moves the total more than the UPS itself. Encom Digital is SIEL’s only retailer in Kenya and East Africa, and we supply each unit on order. Also, our prices always exclude VAT.
Cheaper 2000VA units exist, of course, but most are line interactive and give about 1,200 W. So compare watts, battery time and warranty, not just the sticker. For a quote, send us your load list or measured watts and the runtime you want. Request a quote on WhatsApp on +254 714 962 072, or Email us.
Should you buy the 1K, the 2K or the 3K?
In general, choose by your real load, with 30% headroom on top:
- Under about 700 W: the SIEL Greenpoint 1K is enough, and it costs the least.
- From about 700 to 1,400 W: the Greenpoint 2K is the right fit.
- From about 1,400 to 2,100 W: step up to the Greenpoint 3K.

Specs and battery time
Is 2kVA equal to 2000 watts?
Only when the output power factor is 1. The Greenpoint 2K gives 2,000 W, whereas the APC Back-UPS 2200VA, for example, is rated at 1.2 kW.
How long will a 2kVA UPS last?
With one battery box, it lasts at most about 104 minutes at 500 W on paper. Real runtime is shorter, but up to four boxes extend it.
How many batteries does a 2kVA UPS use?
The Greenpoint 2K runs on a 48 V bank of 12 V, 9 Ah AGM blocks. Each optional box then adds 8 more blocks.
Can I monitor the UPS from my computer?
Yes. The Greenpoint 2K has USB, RS232, relay contacts and SNMP, so it can warn you and then shut your server down cleanly.
Using it in Kenya
How many computers can a 2kVA UPS run?
About six to eight office desktops with LED monitors, at roughly 150 W each. However, gaming PCs and workstations draw more, so measure them first.
Can a 2kVA UPS run a fridge or a TV?
A TV, yes, but keep fridges off it, because their start-up surge strains the inverter. For home appliances, a power station is the better choice.
Do I need an electrician to install it?
Not usually, since a full load draws about 8.7 A from a 13 A socket. Still, give it a dedicated socket in good condition.
Can I run a laser printer on a 2kVA UPS?
We advise against it, because a laser printer pulls large surges when its heater warms up. Instead, plug it into a surge protected wall socket.
