The Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable connects iPhones, iPads and AirPods that use the Lightning port to a USB-C charger or a USB-C Mac. With a USB-C power adapter it fast charges iPhone 8 and later, so an iPhone 11, 12, 13 or 14 can reach around 50% in about 30 minutes.

Charging speed

Fast charging needs a USB-C Power Delivery adapter of 18W or more, such as the Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter or the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter. With an old USB-A adapter you would need a different cable, and charging is slower. Apple explains fast charging on its iPhone fast charge support page.

Non-certified Lightning cables are a common cause of “accessory not supported” warnings, slow charging and damaged charging ports. A genuine Apple cable has the authentication chip the iPhone expects, charges at the right speed and keeps working after iOS updates.

Looking after it

Most Lightning cables fail where the cable meets the plug. Unplug by holding the plug, avoid sharp bends, and do not use the phone with the cable bent tightly while charging. Clean pocket lint out of the iPhone’s port with a wooden toothpick if the cable stops sitting firmly.
