Home office backup that keeps a desktop PC running
The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus is a compact power station built for the home office. It stays plugged in between the wall and your computer, router and phone chargers. When KPLC cuts out, it switches to battery in under 10 milliseconds, which is fast enough that a desktop PC normally keeps running and you don’t lose the document you were working on. When you need more runtime, you can stack an extra battery underneath.
It sits in our portable power stations range, part of our wider power and backup section.
What you get with the RIVER 3 Plus
286Wh LFP battery, expandable
The built-in battery holds 286Wh and uses LFP cells, which EcoFlow rates for 3,000 cycles to 80% capacity. Add the EB300 extra battery and the pair holds 572Wh. EcoFlow lists 858Wh as the largest system, reached with its bigger 572Wh extra battery. The extra battery connects through pogo pins, with no cables.
600W output, 1200W with X-Boost
The AC output is rated at 600W, with a 1200W surge. That covers an office desktop and monitor, a router, a printer on standby and a lamp at the same time. X-Boost lets some resistive appliances up to 1200W run at reduced voltage, but this is not a kitchen unit. Kettles, irons and microwaves are out.
Under 10ms switchover
EcoFlow quotes a switchover time of under 10 milliseconds. That is the main reason to choose this over the smaller RIVER 3. Most desktop power supplies ride through a 10ms gap without restarting.
Ports
Alongside the AC outlets you get a USB-C port rated up to 100W, two 12W USB-A ports and a 12V car-style outlet rated at 126W. Charging a laptop from USB-C wastes less energy than running its charger from AC.
Charging
From a wall socket it charges from empty to full in about an hour, according to EcoFlow, drawing up to 360W. It takes up to 220W of solar between 11V and 55V, and EcoFlow quotes a full charge in as little as 1.5 hours in good sun. You can also charge from a car socket.
Size, noise and app
It measures 234 x 232 x 146 mm and weighs 4.7 kg. EcoFlow rates it under 30dB. The EcoFlow app shows what you are using, sends alerts when the mains fails and lets you control charging.
How long will it run?
To estimate runtime, take the capacity in watt-hours, reduce it by about 15% for inverter losses, and divide by the load in watts. Treat these as estimates.
- Laptop and router, about 55W: 286 x 0.85 = about 243Wh, divided by 55W gives roughly 4.5 hours.
- Office desktop, 24-inch monitor and router, about 150W: roughly 1.5 hours.
- The same 150W with the EB300 attached (572Wh): 572 x 0.85 / 150 gives roughly 3 hours.
Very small loads run shorter than the arithmetic suggests, because the inverter draws power just by being on. EcoFlow’s own figure for a 3W router is up to 35 hours.
Compatibility
EcoFlow’s international versions output 230V AC as a pure sine wave, which matches Kenyan mains and suits computers. The AC socket type depends on the regional version, so ask us which plug it takes if that matters. The 100W USB-C port works with USB-C laptops, phones and tablets. A cable such as the UGREEN 240W USB-C cable handles the full power. The only extra battery that fits is the RIVER 3 Plus series.
Setting it up
Charge it fully, then pair it with the EcoFlow app over Bluetooth and update the firmware. Keep its AC cable plugged into the wall, plug your PC, monitor and router into it, and switch on the AC output. Pull the wall plug once to test that everything stays on.
Who it suits
It suits people who work from home on a desktop or laptop, freelancers who can’t afford to drop off a client call, small offices with one or two key machines, and gamers who want a console and router to survive short outages. It is not the right choice for a fridge, for running a TV and lights through a long night, or for protecting servers and network racks that need continuous conditioned power.
How it compares
The EcoFlow RIVER 3 costs less and is enough for Wi-Fi and a laptop, but switches in under 20ms. For about 1kWh and enough output for household appliances, look at the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Classic, which also switches in 10ms. For several office PCs, a server or a network cabinet, an online UPS such as the SIEL Greenpoint 2K runs the load through its inverter all the time, so there is no switchover gap.

Looking after it
Keep the vents clear and the unit out of direct sun. EcoFlow gives an ideal operating range of 20 to 30°C, with charging between 0 and 45°C. Wipe it with a dry cloth. If it will sit unused for a long time, top it up every few months. EcoFlow says it survives a 1 metre drop, but treat it as electronics, not a toolbox.
Frequently asked questions
Will my desktop PC stay on during a power cut?
In most cases, yes. The switchover is under 10ms, which most desktop power supplies handle.
Can I add more battery later?
Yes. The EB300 takes it to 572Wh. EcoFlow’s larger extra battery takes it to 858Wh.
Can it run a fridge?
It is not designed for it. A DELTA model is the better choice.
Can I use it while it charges?
Yes. That is how it works as a backup.
What solar panel do I need?
One that works between 11V and 55V. It accepts up to 220W.
Is it loud?
No. EcoFlow rates it under 30dB.
