A dependable wireless mouse for everyday work

The Logitech M185 is a favourite with offices, schools and home users for a simple reason: it is dependable and cheap to own. You plug a tiny receiver into a USB port, switch the mouse on, and it works. There is nothing to install, no account to create and no charging cable to keep track of.

It sits in our mice and keyboards range, alongside the keyboards and combos that pair well with it.

What makes the M185 a sensible buy

Plug-and-play wireless

The M185 connects over 2.4 GHz wireless through a USB nano receiver. The receiver is small enough to leave plugged into a laptop permanently, so you are not pulling it out every time you pack your bag. Logitech rates the range at up to 10 metres, which is far more than you need at a desk but useful if you run slides from a laptop across a meeting room.

A battery that lasts about a year

One AA battery powers the mouse for up to 12 months, according to Logitech. That figure assumes typical office use, and the mouse helps by going to sleep when you stop using it. There is also an on and off switch underneath, so it won’t drain the battery in a bag. For an office manager, this means one battery change a year per desk rather than a drawer full of charging cables.

A shape that suits most hands

The body is contoured but symmetrical, so it works for right-handed and left-handed users. It is a compact mouse, a little smaller than a full-size desktop mouse, which makes it easy to carry with a laptop. People with large hands who spend all day on a mouse may prefer something bigger, and we cover that below.

Works on almost any surface

The optical sensor tracks smoothly on a desk, a mouse pad or a wooden table. Like most optical mice, it struggles on glass and very shiny surfaces. If your desk is glass, a UGREEN mouse pad solves the problem for very little money.

Line-by-line scrolling

The scroll wheel moves in steps, one line at a time. That gives you control when you are working through a spreadsheet or reading a long document.

Compatibility

The M185 works with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and Linux. Because it uses a USB-A receiver, newer laptops that only have USB-C ports, such as the MacBook Air M5, need a USB-C adapter or hub. If you would rather avoid adapters, a Bluetooth mouse like the Logitech M196 connects without one.

Setting it up

Plug the USB receiver into a free USB port and slide the switch underneath the mouse to on. Your computer recognises it within a few seconds. The battery comes in the box, so it is ready to use straight away.

Which colour

We stock the M185 in Swift Grey, Blue and Red. All three cost the same and perform the same. Swift Grey suits a corporate office, while Blue and Red are popular with students who want to spot their mouse in a shared lab. Pick the colour from the options above. The photos show Swift Grey.

Who it suits

The M185 is the right choice for offices buying mice in bulk, for students who want a reliable mouse for a laptop, and for anyone replacing a worn-out mouse without overthinking it. It is less suited to graphic designers who need extra buttons, gamers who need a high-precision sensor, or people working on a glass desk without a mouse pad.

How it compares

If you want the same idea in a smaller, lighter body, the Logitech M171 comes in four colours. If you have larger hands, the Logitech M190 is full size and still affordable. For shared offices where clicking noise matters, the Logitech M221 Silent keeps the clicks to a soft tap. And if you are buying keyboards as well, the Logitech MK270 combo gives you a keyboard and mouse on one receiver for a small step up in price.

Looking after it

Wipe the mouse with a slightly damp cloth now and then, and keep the sensor window underneath free of dust. When the pointer starts to jump or lag, it is usually the battery. Swap in a fresh AA and it will behave like new. Keep the receiver safe when you unplug it, because the mouse is paired to that receiver.
