HP 15-dw Laptop

A 15.6 inch HP laptop with a number pad for home, school and small offices

The HP 15-dw is HP’s everyday 15.6 inch laptop. It gives you a big screen, a full keyboard with a number pad, a wired Ethernet port and an SD card reader at a price that suits families, students and small businesses. We have it in three configurations: an 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1125G4 with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, a 10th Gen Intel Core i5-10210U with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, and an 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7 with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. We install Windows 11 on each one before delivery.

It is part of our range of student laptops.

What you get

Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7

All three processors have four cores and eight threads. The Core i3-1125G4 handles schoolwork, email, browsing and documents. The Core i5-10210U boosts up to 4.2GHz and is a sound choice for office work, online classes and video calls. The Core i7-1165G7 is the quickest of the three. It boosts up to 4.7GHz and has Intel Iris Xe graphics, so it copes with large spreadsheets, many open tabs and light photo editing.

Memory and storage

The Core i3 version has 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. That is a lot of space for photos and files, but a hard drive starts up and opens programs much more slowly than an SSD, and 4GB is tight on Windows 11. It works for light use, and it can be improved later, because the 15-dw has two memory slots and an M.2 slot for an SSD next to the drive bay. The Core i5 and Core i7 versions have 8GB of RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD, which feels much quicker day to day. Ask us before you buy memory or an SSD so we can confirm what fits.

15.6 inch screen and number pad

HP’s datasheet for the Core i7 unit lists a 15.6 inch HD (1366 x 768) anti-glare screen with slim side bezels. The 15-dw range was also sold with Full HD panels, so ask us to confirm the screen on the Core i3 and Core i5 units if sharpness matters to you. The full-size keyboard includes a number pad, which helps with data entry, bookkeeping and maths homework.

Ports

HP lists one USB-C port (5Gbps, for data only, not for charging or screens), two USB-A 5Gbps ports, HDMI 1.4b for a monitor, TV or projector, a Gigabit Ethernet port, an SD card reader and a headset jack. It charges through HP’s round barrel charger. The Ethernet port is useful where Wi-Fi is weak or the office runs on cabled internet.

Wireless and webcam

Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 are built in, with an HP True Vision 720p webcam and dual microphones for online classes, Teams and Zoom.

Size and weight

HP quotes it at about 358 x 242mm and 20mm thick, with a weight of about 1.8kg. Treat it as a home or desk laptop that you can still carry to class or a meeting, rather than one for carrying all day.

Who it suits

The Core i3 version suits a family computer, a reception desk or a student on a tight budget whose work is mostly browsing and documents. The Core i5 version suits most home users, students and small offices. The Core i7 version suits people who run several programs at once, such as accountants and business owners. If you carry your laptop every day, a 14 inch model such as the HP 14s is lighter.

Operating system

We install Windows 11 on it before delivery, so it is ready to use when it arrives. If you would rather run a different operating system, tell us when you order.

How it compares

The HP 15-fd0 is the newer HP 15, with more recent processors and a Full HD screen. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15IRH10 gives you a taller 15.3 inch screen, 16GB of RAM and an H-series processor. For a business-grade 15.6 inch laptop with a number pad, look at the Dell Vostro 3530.

Looking after it

Use a surge protector or a UPS where power cuts are common, because a surge when power returns can damage the charger and the board. Keep the vents clear by working on a hard surface rather than a bed or sofa. On the Core i3 version with the hard drive, avoid knocking or moving the laptop sharply while it is working, since hard drives are more sensitive to shocks than SSDs. Clean the keyboard with a soft brush and the screen with a dry microfibre cloth.

Works well with

The HP Wireless Mouse 200 is an easy add-on, and the HP 330 Wireless Keyboard helps if the laptop lives on a desk. For a full desk setup in one box, the Logitech MK540 keyboard and mouse combo is a good fit.
