ASUS Vivobook S14 OLED S5406

A light 14 inch OLED laptop for students and home users who want long battery life

The ASUS Vivobook S14 OLED (S5406SA) is a thin 14 inch laptop built around Intel’s Core Ultra 7 256V, a Lunar Lake chip designed for battery life and on-device AI. It weighs about 1.3kg and carries an OLED screen, a full set of ports and a 75Wh battery. The version we stock has 16GB of memory, a 512GB SSD and Windows 11 Home.

It is part of our range of home laptops.

What you get

Intel Core Ultra 7 256V

The Core Ultra 7 256V has eight cores and eight threads and boosts up to 4.8GHz. It is efficient, so the laptop stays cool and quiet in normal use. The built-in NPU is rated at up to 47 TOPS, which makes this a Copilot+ PC: Windows features such as Recall, Live Captions with translation and Windows Studio Effects on the webcam run on the laptop itself. Intel Arc graphics handle photo editing, light video work and casual games.

Memory and storage

The 16GB of LPDDR5X memory sits on the processor package, so it is fast but it cannot be upgraded. 16GB is plenty for study, office work and many browser tabs. The 512GB NVMe SSD sits in a standard M.2 slot, so storage can be replaced later with a larger single-sided drive. Ask us before you buy one.

14 inch OLED display

The S5406 uses a 16:10 OLED panel with 100% DCI-P3 colour, deep blacks and up to 600 nits peak brightness for HDR content. ASUS sells it with either a WUXGA (1920 x 1200) or a 3K (2880 x 1800) panel. Ask us which one this unit has if resolution matters to you.

Ports

You get two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports for charging, displays and fast drives, two USB-A ports, full-size HDMI 2.1 and a headphone jack. That is more than most thin laptops this size, so you rarely need a dongle for a mouse, flash disk or projector.

Webcam, wireless and security

The Full HD webcam has an IR sensor for Windows Hello face sign-in and a physical privacy shutter. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in. The backlit keyboard has a Copilot key.

Size, weight and battery

It weighs about 1.3kg and is about 1.39cm to 1.59cm thick. The 75Wh battery is large for a 14 inch laptop, and with Lunar Lake’s efficiency it comfortably covers a day of classes or office work. It charges over USB-C.

Who it suits

It suits university students, writers, home users and small business owners who want a light laptop with a good screen and long battery life. The OLED panel also makes it a pleasant laptop for films and photo work. If you need to play recent games at high settings or edit long 4K videos often, a laptop with dedicated graphics will do better. If you want more than 16GB of memory, look at another model, because this one cannot be upgraded.

Operating system

It ships with Windows 11 Home. Copilot+ PC features are switched on through Windows Update. If your company needs to join the laptop to a domain or manage it centrally, you will need Windows 11 Pro. Ask us about the upgrade before you order.

How it compares

The ASUS Vivobook 14 X1404 costs much less and suits basic schoolwork, but has an older chip and a standard LCD screen. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 2-in-1 14IRH9 folds into a tablet if you want to write on the screen. The HP OmniBook X Flip 14 is another Lunar Lake Copilot+ PC that also converts to a tablet. If you want two screens for serious multitasking, see the ASUS Zenbook Duo.

Looking after it

Use a surge protector or UPS where power cuts are common, because a surge on return can damage the charger and the board. In the MyASUS app, turn on Battery Care Mode, which stops charging at 80% when the laptop sits on the charger most of the day. OLED screens can keep a faint image of things that stay still for very long periods, so let the screen saver or auto-hide taskbar do their job. Keep vents clear and clean the screen with a dry microfibre cloth.

Works well with

The Logitech MX Anywhere 3S is small enough to carry with it. The UGREEN Metallic Foldable Laptop Stand lifts the screen to eye level, and the Logitech C920e webcam is useful if you want a second camera angle at a desk.
