How much does a full CCTV system cost in Kenya?
A full system costs more than the cameras, because you also need a recorder, a hard drive and cable. For example, here are camera and recorder totals at today’s prices:
- First of all, four Hikvision 2MP mini bullets (KES 17,000) and a 4 channel mini DVR (KES 5,400) come to KES 22,400.
- Eight of the same cameras with an 8 channel mini DVR come to KES 41,450, since that DVR costs KES 7,450.
- Four 4MP ColorVu IP turrets with a 4 channel PoE NVR cost KES 62,150, but you skip separate camera power.
- Meanwhile, the Hikvision NK844WDH Wi-Fi kit puts four 4MP cameras and an NVR in one box for KES 33,800.
These totals still leave out the hard drive, power supplies and labour.
How much is a DVR or NVR in Kenya?
Overall, a Hikvision DVR costs KES 5,400 to KES 35,550, depending on the number of channels. A DVR records Turbo HD cameras over coax, while an NVR records IP cameras over the network.
| Recorder | Channels and price |
|---|---|
| DS-7100HGHI-M1 mini DVR | 4, 8 or 16 channels: KES 5,400, 7,450 or 10,950 |
| DS-7200HGHI 1U DVR | 4 to 32 channels: KES 6,150 to 35,550 |

Buy a recorder with spare channels, so you can add cameras later.
Which CCTV camera is best for home in Kenya?
For most homes, the best setup is two to four outdoor cameras on the gate and doors, as well as one indoor camera. The right model then depends on your compound.
For example, a flat often needs only a Wi-Fi camera such as the EZVIZ C6N 3K indoor camera at KES 4,800. It follows people and pets, and its sleep mode also turns the lens away for privacy.
A house with a compound, however, does better with wired cameras and a DVR. In particular, a ColorVu bullet on the gate shows the colour of a car or jacket at night. That detail helps when you report an incident. Then add a turret with a siren, such as the Hikvision DS-2CE78D0T-LXTS turret, at the main door.
If you also want to see visitors before you open the gate, the EZVIZ HP5 video doorphone costs KES 20,150, and it also opens the gate from the app.
Which CCTV camera is best for a shop or office in Kenya?
Because a shop or office needs all day recording and fast playback, a wired DVR or NVR system suits it best.
For a shopfront, the Hikvision dual lens camera covers a wide counter with one unit, so you buy fewer cameras. In addition, its 130dB WDR helps when a bright doorway sits behind your customers.
Meanwhile, for a warehouse or car park, the AcuSense DS-2CD2646G2-IZS zooms from 2.8 to 12mm by remote. It also filters alerts to people and vehicles, so guards get fewer false alarms.
Finally, for a farm gate with no power, the solar 4G Hikvision camera needs only sunlight and a SIM card. Since it carries a 9000mAh battery, it keeps working through the night.
Can a CCTV camera show colour at night?
Yes, ColorVu cameras can, although most others switch to black and white infrared after dark. That is because Hikvision ColorVu models use a wide F1.0 lens to gather as much light as possible.
According to Hikvision, “ColorVu-enabled cameras render vivid color images in dim light, even down to 0.0005 lux.” In fact, the brand compares that level to a moonless, starlit night. When there is no light at all, the ColorVu Pro series adds white light to keep the colour.
Smart Hybrid Light models, such as the DS-2CE18K0T-LFS, also carry both infrared and white light.
Do you need to register CCTV in Kenya?
Yes, most businesses that run security cameras do, because of Kenya’s 2021 registration rules. In fact, the Data Protection (Registration of Data Controllers and Data Processors) Regulations, 2021 list “operating security CCTV systems” among the purposes that need registration.
Also, the exemption for firms under KES 5 million turnover and ten staff does not apply to those listed purposes. As a result, even a small shop with cameras should check its status with the Data Commissioner.
However, homes have limits too. For example, in Ondieki v Maeda on 31 May 2023, the High Court in Nairobi ordered a homeowner’s camera taken down. That was because it pointed at a neighbour’s property. As Justice Ong’udi wrote, “I find, that the petitioner’s right to privacy was breached by the respondent.”
So point cameras at your own gate, doors and compound, rather than into the next plot. We are not lawyers, therefore please check your own case with the ODPC or a legal adviser.
Why do Kenyans buy CCTV cameras?
Mostly to deter theft, as well as to have proof when it happens. According to KNBS figures reported by The Star, police recorded 96,038 crimes in 2025, down 5.1% from 101,220 in 2024.
Still, stealing alone made up 16,430 of those cases. So a clear night picture of a face or number plate matters more than megapixels.
How do you keep CCTV recording when stima imeenda?
Put the DVR or NVR, the router and the camera power supply on a UPS before the next outage. Otherwise the system goes blank just when a blackout gives thieves cover.
Kenya Power posts planned interruption notices on its official X account, so you can see when your area will go off. If your recorder sits in a network cabinet, then our guide to sizing a rack mount UPS explains watts and runtime.
For a home setup, however, a portable power station from EcoFlow can keep a small recorder and router running through an outage. Our earlier post on working through a power cut also covers more backup options. Of course, solar 4G cameras skip the problem entirely.
